Astrolabe Spare Plates/Retes

$12 - $18

These are some spare parts to fit onto my Astrolabes that you can find in other listings. If you need the complete instrument, please check the rest of my shop.

Regarding Wooden Retes:
This will come with an engraved edge surround that is intended to protect the Rete, but it's optional to use it.
You would need to glue the new surround onto the front of your astrolabe. The Rete was traditionally protected and this surround will do that job. However it is not without risk. I use Boiled Linseed Oil to finish my wood and you'll need to get under that oil coating in order that glue might stick. You will need to first clean the front surface of your astrolabe with alcohol to cut into the oil, then THOROUGHLY sand the existing front, before gluing with wood glue.
(If you're in the US, I recommend Titebond 3 Ultimate Wood Glue which is readily available in DIY stores etc)
You can certainly choose not to risk damaging your instrument and just use the Rete on its own, it will work fine.

Regarding Plate Discs:
These will fit best into an existing Multi-Plate Astrolabe. You can use them with my Single-Plate devices, but there is nothing on that instrument to fit into the lock notch on the plate, so it's likely the plate will spin when you rotate the rete. Oh, and you'd need a longer bolt; they're #8-32 size (imperial).

You'll need to choose which Latitudes you need, preferably to the nearest 5º. If this a gift, please use the recipient's location. You can find that here: https://www.latlong.net
Latitude plates come two to a disc; I engrave both front and back of each disc.

Parts are laser cut from White Birch or Acrylic.
