This is a modern recreation of the ancient Astrolabe, an instrument used for calendar based astronomical observations. You can find the rise and set times of the Sun and stars, find out when they will be in certain positions, find out the offset of the Sun due to the Equation of Time, and measure other things such as distances and heights. NB: Times given by this instrument are shown in Solar Time which is not the same as on your watch! (See the instructions for a fuller explanation of this)
You'll need to choose which Latitude you need, to the nearest whole degree (eg 33º, not 33.46º). If this a gift, please use the recipient's location. You can find that here: https://www.latlong.net
Northern Hemisphere only please on this listing - if you want a Southern Hemisphere astrolabe then I'll need to make that separately, so please get in contact. It can be done!
*** Please enter your latitude choice in the 'notes' box at checkout. ***
The Astrolabe is laser cut from brass sheet, bolted together with brass hardware and fitted with a leather hanging loop. It is polished and lacquered, however the buyer should note that brass will naturally darken over time - it can always be shined up again with a good polish.
The case is laser cut from real leather; dyed and stitched together by me. It is designed to fit the astrolabe snugly and has a wooden insert to give it strength and rigidity. It has a belt loop on the back.
The brass astrolabe is 4.4" diameter; slightly smaller than the wooden Mini, which is as large as I can make in brass right now. It is, of course, also heavier than the Mini. Being shiny metal, the markings are crisp and readable.
